Sitaare Zameen Par Movie Review: The Spiritual Sequel to Taare Zameen Par manages to warm your heart despite being a remake

Movie Review by Prashant Shukla

Plot:

A highly skilled but arrogant and rude basketball coach named Gulshan is suspended for his unprofessional behavior. Instead of punishment, the court decides to put his talent to use by assigning him the task of training a group of individuals with intellectual disabilities. How such a narcissistic man manages to coach them -and undergo a change of heart-forms the core of the film’s premise

The Performances:

The performances in Sitaare Zameen Par are a classic staple of feel-good, slice-of-life cinema. The entire cast-especially the actors playing the specially-abled characters-will warm your heart and put a smile on your face, with Gopi Varma as Guddu in the interval block standing out in particular. On the other hand, while I’m no one to judge or teach Aamir Khan about acting, his wide- eyed and occasionally hammy approach to the character is still noticeable at times-but never to a point where it hinders the viewing experience.

The Learning Arc:

The most praiseworthy aspect of Sitaare Zameen Par is the learning arc of Aamir’s character. While it may not be a home run in terms of execution (more on that later), it’s certainly not jarring. The film beautifully chronicles his journey of unlearning many things that society has long normalized. There are no overly depressing subplots or emotional roller coasters-just a sweet and heartwarming tale that keeps a smile on your face throughout its runtime.

The Execution:

So yes, Sitaare Zameen Par is a beautiful, feel- good film-but it never quite reaches the point where you’d say, “This will stay with me for a while,” like its predecessor. I didn’t want to compare it to Taare Zameen Par, but the makers unintentionally push that comparison by calling it a spiritual sequel. It makes you emotional, but never truly hits you in the gut. The messaging often feels spoon-fed, with characters around Aamir constantly moral lecturing him. Even the music, while nice, doesn’t quite etch itself into your memory.

Final Verdict:

Sitaare Zameen Par may not leave a lasting impact like its predecessor, but it still offers a warm, feel-good experience. Despite its flaws, the film’s heart is in the right place.
