How is a Rotten Tomatoes score calculated?

The percentage of critics who have considered a film to be “fresh,” indicating their opinion of it is more favorable than negative, is represented by the Rotten Tomatoes score. The goal is to provide moviegoers with a sense of critical agreement fast.

In an email, Jeff Voris, a vice president at Rotten Tomatoes, said, “Our mission is to serve fans by giving them valuable tools and one-stop access to critic reviews, user ratings, and entertainment news to help with their entertainment viewing decisions.”

The site’s scores comprise the opinions of around 3,000 reviewers — known as “Approved Tomatometer Critics” — who have met a set of standards outlined by Rotten Tomatoes. However, not every critic reviews every film, thus any given number is most likely drawn from a few hundred critics, or even less.

Rotten Tomatoes only collects critics who have been consistently publishing movie reviews with a generally well-read site for at least two years, and those critics must be “active,” which means they’ve published at least one review in the previous year. The site also considers a selection of critics to be “top critics,” and assigns them a different score.

Some critics (or personnel at their magazines) submit their reviews, choose their extract quotations, and label them “fresh” or “rotten.” The Rotten Tomatoes team has uploaded, pull-quoted, and tagged reviews as fresh or rotten by other critics (including myself).

If the staff is unsure whether to mark a review as fresh or rotting in the second situation, they contact the critic for clarification. And those who disagree with the classification of the site can ask for it to be amended.

As reviews for a film collect, the Rotten Tomatoes score calculates the percentage of positive reviews that outnumber negative ones and assigns a fresh or rotten rating to the film. Scores of over 60% are regarded fresh, whereas scores of 59 percent or less are considered rotten. A film must have at least 40 reviews, 75 percent of which are fresh, and five of which are from ‘top’ critics to receive the coveted ‘designated fresh’ seal.
