How does the Tomatometer work on Rotten Tomatoes?

The ‘Tomatometer,’ as the Rotten Tomatoes rating system is known, is a scale. This is the proportion of good reviews for a specific film or television show. After five reviews, the Tomatometer score is determined.

As the reviews come in, The Tomatometer weighs the positive reviews against the negative ones to determine if the film or television show is fresh or rotten. When at least 60% of the ratings are good, the tomato receives a red tomato score, indicating that it is still fresh. When less than 60% of the evaluations are good, a green splat appears, denoting rotten status.

The Critic selection process at Rotten Tomatoes is meticulous. It won’t just be any critic’s opinion. It gathers people who have published movie reviews on a regular basis over the past two years and are considered active by Rotten Tomatoes.

This simply implies they’ve written a review in the recent 12 months. While there are over 3,000 accepted reviewers, only a few hundred are usually actively reviewing at any given time. Often, it’s a lot less. In addition, Top Critics receive a separate score. While the Rotten Tomatoes ranking system is based on popular consensus, some of the more well-known critics can be found in a separate section.

This is a fantastic feature of the site because it not only provides information from regular moviegoers but also allows you to check how close this score is to critics’ scores. It can help you decide whether it’s a must-see or a likely pass. It’s also calculated in the same way as critic reviews are.

A popcorn bucket represents the Audience Score. The score is the percentage of users who gave the film or show a good rating. There’s also a section for Verified Ratings, which includes reviews from people who have purchased tickets.

At least 60% of users must give a film or show a star rating of 3.5 or above to obtain a full popcorn bucket. A tipped popcorn bucket means that fewer than 60% of people gave it a 3.5 or higher rating.
