Gideon’s Trumpet is a 1980 American made-for-television historical drama film based on Anthony Lewis’s biography of the same name. The video covers the events leading up to and including the 1963 United States Supreme Court case Gideon v. Wainwright, which gave criminal defendants who couldn’t afford an attorney and didn’t meet special standards to acquire one for free the right to have one. Following the verdict, the case’s provisions were implemented openly, nationally, and even globally.
The Hallmark Hall of Fame film, distributed by Worldvision Enterprises, premiered on CBS-TV on April 30, 1980. Henry Fonda plays Clarence Earl Gideon, José Ferrer plays Abe Fortas, and John Houseman plays the Chief Justice of the United States in the film.
Fay Wray, Sam Jaffe, and Dean Jagger were among the other famous actors in the film. The film was directed by Robert L. Collins. John Houseman and David W. Rintels directed the production and wrote the script. The film received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations the same year it aired on television, on September 7, 1980.
In addition to directing Gideon’s Trumpet, Robert Collins was a key player in the television series Serpico and the 1979 remake of Acts of Violence. David R. Rintels works in the television film industry as well.
