Shashank Khaitan wrote and directed Badrinath Ki Dulhania, a 2017 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy film produced by Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, and Apoorva Mehta under the Dharma Productions label.
It is a mystical sequel to the 2014 film Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, and it stars Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt as an aspiring independent air hostess from rural India who refuses to adhere to her chauvinistic fiancé’s patriarchal expectations. Aakanksha Singh, Rituraj Singh, Yash Sinha, Shweta Basu Prasad, Gaurav Pandey, Aparshakti Khurana, Sahil Vaid, and Swanand Kirkire also appear in supporting roles in the film.
Following their previous films Student of the Year (2012) and Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania (2014), which were both directed by and produced by Johar, and the latter marked Khaitan’s directorial debut, Badrinath Ki Dulhania represented their third collaboration.
It is the sequel to the Dulhania franchise. Principal photography began in May 2016 and was shot in Panvel, Singapore, and Kota on a budget of 270 million rupees; 120 million Rupees was spent on the film’s promotion, print, and publicity.
It was nominated in eight categories at the 63rd Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Director for Khaitan, Best Actor for Dhawan, and Best Actress for Bhatt, with Singh winning Best Male Playback Singer.
