Yash Chopra’s Yash Raj Films produced and directed Darr: A Violent Love Story, a romantic psychological thriller released in 1993. Juhi Chawla, Sunny Deol, and Shah Rukh Khan appeared in the film, which also has Anupam Kher, Tanvi Azmi, and Dalip Tahil in supporting parts.
Darr has received a number of awards, including the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Healthy Entertainment. At the 39th Filmfare Prizes, the film garnered ten nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Villain, and Best Villain for Khan, and won two awards, including Best Comedian for Kher.
This was Chawla’s fourth box-office smash of the year, establishing her reputation as a leading lady in the 1990s. Khan’s portrayal of an obsessive lover was praised by critics and viewers alike, and he received numerous prizes for it.
Sanjay Dutt was the first option for the role of antagonist Rahul, but Yash Chopra was unable to cast him due to his prison sentence for illegally possessing weapons. Sudesh Berry was then considered for the part, but following a screen test, he was turned down. Due to other commitments, Ajay Devgn was not able to take the part of Rahul.
Shiv-Hari composed the music for Darr’s soundtrack. Anand Bakshi is the author. It was the year’s second most popular Bollywood soundtrack album.
