Is Planes 3 coming out?

Disney has opted to shut down DisneyToon Studios, the animation branch responsible for the company’s direct-to-video output, following the restructuring of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar, which will culminate in John Lasseter’s departure at the end of the year.

The move has been discussed for some time and is unrelated to Lasseter’s decision to depart the firm following allegations of sexual misconduct against female colleagues. The company, which employs 75 people, will close down immediately. This decision has no bearing on Walt Disney Animation Studios or Pixar, who will continue to produce high-quality animated films. It’s unclear whether any DisneyToon staff will be transferred to one of the animation divisions.

The third Planes film, which was previously scheduled to be released in March 2019, will be withdrawn from Disney’s release schedule as a result of DisneyToon’s closure. It’s unknown whether the film will be completed and released abroad, but given that the production is no longer in progress, it doesn’t appear likely.

With the likelihood of Disney acquiring 21st Century Fox growing, it appears like Blue Sky Studios will replace DisneyToon as Disney’s third animation company. However, it’s feasible that Disney will sell Blue Sky to a third party.
