Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, directed by George C. Wolfe and written by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, is a 2020 American biographical musical drama film based on August Wilson’s 1982 play of the same name. Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman, Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, and Michael Potts feature in the picture. It centers on Ma Rainey, a well-known blues singer, and depicts a tumultuous recording session in Chicago in the 1920s.
The movie garnered a lot of positive feedback. Davis, Boseman, and Turman’s performances, as well as the costume design and production qualities, were praised by critics. The American Film Institute called it one of the top 10 films of 2020. At the 93rd Academy Awards, the film got five nominations, including Best Actor (Boseman) and Best Actress (Davis), and won two awards: Makeup and Hairstyling and Costume Design.
