The Suicide Squad is a superhero film released in 2021 based on the DC Comics team of the same name. In the film, the Suicide Squad is dispatched to the island nation of Corto Maltese with the mission of destroying evidence of the massive extraterrestrial starfish Starro the Conqueror.

By March 2016, David Ayer was set to return as director for a Suicide Squad sequel, but he instead chose to make a Gotham City Sirens film. Before hiring Gavin O’Connor in September 2017, Warner Bros. considered a number of replacement directors.

Many people thought the film was much better than its predecessor, and it was the third most-streamed film on HBO Max in 2021. However, it was a box office flop, generating $167.4 million worldwide against a $185 million production budget. In January 2022, HBO Max will premiere Peacemaker, a spin-off television series featuring Cena.
