Deewaanapan is a 2001 Hindi love film from India that was released on November 16, 2001. It is directed by Ashu Trikha and stars Arjun Rampal and Dia Mirza. Supporting roles are played by Om Puri and Vinod Khanna.
Suraj Saxena (Arjun Rampal) lives with his father (Om Puri), mother (Smita Jaykar), and sister, Asha, in a remote hill area in India (Amita Nangia). One day, he meets Kiran Choudhary (Dia Mirza), who has traveled with a group of girls on a holiday excursion. He offers to take her on a tour of the city, and they fall in love. Suraj is unable to see her by train because his father is suffering from chest problems and must be transported to the hospital.
Suraj, on the other hand, can’t seem to get Kiran out of his head or heart. Suraj enrolls in college and gains several new acquaintances, as well as becoming a popular basketball player before his sister marries. He eventually runs across Kiran, and the two of them rekindle their romance.
Suraj is brought before Ranvir Choudhary (Vinod Khanna), who does not appreciate the focus of a poor man like Suraj on his daughter, and is introduced to his many friends, which include prominent lawyers, politicians, high-ranking civil and municipal employees, the police commissioner, and the state chief minister.
Suraj and his family are informed that if they do not leave town right now, they will face grave repercussions. Suraj refuses to leave town, and hell breaks loose on his family and him. Suraj’s mother is unable to buy food and is publicly humiliated; his father is followed around by Ranvir’s thugs, harassed, and robbed, and then confronts the ultimate betrayal of being openly arrested, handcuffed, and imprisoned on charges of colluding against the country and losing his job; and some of Suraj’s friends exile him.
Will Suraj give in and flee the city under such duress, or will he let his father suffer in prison? Ranvir has vowed to kill Suraj, but what will happen to Suraj’s mother if he succeeds?
