Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty was repeatedly hugged and kissed on the cheeks by American actor Richard Gere of ‘Pretty Woman’ fame during an AIDS-awareness event in 2007. Their ostentatious expression of affection provoked the people’s wrath. It also sparked a widespread outcry, with effigies of Shetty and Gere being burned in the streets. After a Rajasthan court issued an arrest order for Shetty and Gere, the Supreme Court, led by the Chief Justice of India, dismissed the case.
Richard Tiffany Gere, an American actor, was born on August 31, 1949. In the 1970s, he made his cinematic debut with a supporting role in Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) and a major role in Days of Heaven (1979). His breakthrough came with his role in the 1980 film American Gigolo, which cemented his reputation as a leading man and a sex icon.

Shilpa Shetty (born Ashwini Shetty on June 8, 1975) is an Indian actress, film producer, dancer, author, businesswoman, and former model who is best known for her work in Hindi cinema.
Shetty made her film debut with the thriller Baazigar (1993), for which she was nominated for two Filmfare Awards. She then went on to star in the critically acclaimed action comedy Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), in which she played a dual role.
