Mel Gibson, the actor, and director owns the island. Mago is 166 statute miles ENE of Suva, Fiji’s capital, and 14 miles (23 kilometers) SW of Namalata, a small island near Vanua Balavu where descendants of the original Mago inhabitants still live.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016), his directorial return after a ten-year hiatus, won two Academy Awards and was nominated for four more, including Best Picture and Best Director for Gibson, his second nomination in the category.
