Which is the highest-grossing film in Hong Kong?

Longman Leung and Sunny Luk wrote and directed Cold War 2, a 2016 Hong Kong-Chinese crime thriller movie. Returning cast members Aaron Kwok, Tony Leung, Charlie Young, Eddie Peng, Aarif Rahman, and Ma Yili join new cast members Chow Yun-fat, Janice Man, Tony Yang, and Bibi Zhou in the sequel to the 2012 box office success Cold War. The film was released in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on July 8, 2016.

Due to the Cold War’s critical and commercial success, a sequel was first confirmed in February 2013, with Chow Yun-fat set to reprise his role as the film’s major antagonist. Sunny Luk, Cold War 2’s co-director, also announced at the time that the script was being developed and that production will begin by the end of 2013. Cold War 2 began filming in September 2015 and ended in December of the same year. On July 8, 2016, the movie was released.

Cold War 2 has a worldwide gross of US$115 million. The movie grossed a total of HK$66,244,171 in Hong Kong, breaking the record for the highest-grossing domestic picture in the territory. It was also the third highest-grossing picture of 2016.

A funeral is held for two Senior Assistant Commissioners who were killed in the previous movie by the Hong Kong Police Force. Commissioner Sean Lau (Aaron Kwok) receives a call from one of the perpetrators of the police van theft shortly after.

He is informed that his wife has been kidnapped and that for her to survive, he must free Joe Lee. To get Joe out of prison, Lau goes against protocol and is directed by the kidnapper to take him to the metro station. Joe can flee with the help of several associates, one of whom detonates a bomb. Lau’s wife is found alive at the station by the assailants.
