Themes such as humanity’s interaction with nature and technology, the wholesomeness of natural and traditional forms of living, the significance of art and craftsmanship, and the challenge of sustaining a pacifist attitude in a violent world repeat frequently in Miyazaki’s works.

His movies frequently feature powerful young women as protagonists, and several of his films have morally ambiguous adversaries with redemptive characteristics. Miyazaki’s work has been acclaimed and honored; in November 2012, he was named a Person of Cultural Merit for extraordinary contributions to culture, and in November 2014, he won the Academy Honorary Award for his impact on animation and cinema. Miyazaki has been credited with inspiring a slew of animators, directors, and authors.
