Tom Cruise, real name Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, is an American actor who rose to prominence in the 1980s as one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men, famed for his clean-cut good looks and versatility. He was born on July 3, 1962.
He has garnered numerous awards over his career, including three Golden Globe nominations, as well as nominations for a British Academy Film Award and three Academy Awards. He is one of the highest-paid actors in the world. His films have grossed more than $4 billion in North America and more than $10.1 billion globally, making him one of the highest-grossing movie actors of all time.
The cruise began acting in the early 1980s and broke through with prominent roles in the comedies Risky Business (1983) and Top Gun (1986). His roles in the drama flick The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988), and Born on the Fourth of July (1989) earned him critical praise.
Cruise won another Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a motivational speaker in the drama picture Magnolia (1999). From 1996 through 2018, he starred as Ethan Hunt in all six Mission: Impossible films.
Cruise has been married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes, all of whom are actresses. He is the father of three children, two of whom were adopted during his marriage to Kidman and the other of whom is a biological daughter from his relationship with Holmes.
Cruise is a vocal supporter of the Church of Scientology and its social activities, which he credits with assisting him in overcoming dyslexia. His Church-affiliated criticisms of psychiatry and anti-depressant medicines, his efforts to establish Scientology as a religion in Europe, and a leaked video interview of him promoting Scientology all created controversy in the 2000s.
