The weekly humorous podcast Hollywood Handbook is hosted by Hayes Davenport and Sean Clements. In most episodes, Davenport, Clements, and a guest offer advice tell stories and engage in parts of the show, all in a comedic, absurdist way. Guests have included Donald Glover, Ellie Kemper, Aubrey Plaza, Kumail Nanjiani, Nick Kroll, Patton Oswalt, Nick Wiger, and Sharon Horgan.
Clements and Davenport met while working on the FOX sitcom Allen Gregory, where they became fast friends and co-founded the Reality Show Show podcast on the Earwolf Network. The podcast featured the duo, as well as reality personalities like Survivor champion John Cochran and comedians like Paul F. Tompkins and Anders Holm, mocking reality shows including The Challenge, World’s Worst Tenants, and Splash.
The Reality Show Show was canceled after 39 episodes by Clements and Davenport due to the show’s small audience and the hosts’ growing disinterest in the concept. Two weeks later, on October 8, 2013, the first episode of Hollywood Handbook, with guest Jake Johnson, was released.
Hollywood Handbook is described as “an insider’s guide to kicking butt and dropping names in the red-carpet-lined back alleys of this business we call entertainment” by the hosts, who portray very successful versions of themselves.
Parts like “The Teaser Freezer,” in which Clements and Davenport comment on a teaser for a forthcoming picture, would be followed by an interview with the guest that included audience questions during the “Popcorn Gallery” segment. In recent years, though, the show has adopted a looser structure, with fewer scripted segments and more interactions with guests and Earwolf staff.
