How is the film Trade?

Trade is a 2007 drama film starring Kevin Kline and directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner. Roland Emmerich and Rosilyn Heller produced it. The film premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2007, and was released in limited release on September 28, 2007. It is based on Peter Landesman’s piece “The Girls Next Door” about sex slaves, which was the cover story of The New York Times Magazine on January 24, 2004.

Adriana, a 13-year-old girl from Mexico City, is abducted by sex traffickers, prompting her 17-year-old brother, Jorge, to embark on a desperate rescue operation to free her. Adriana is trapped and scared by an underground network of international criminals who make millions exploiting their human cargo. Veronica, a young Polish lady duped into the trade by the same criminal group, is Adriana’s lone companion and protector throughout her experience.

As Jorge tries to hunt down the girls’ kidnappers while dodging immigration police and unbelievable difficulties, he encounters Ray, a Texas cop whose own family has been victimized by sex trafficking, and who becomes an ally in the boy’s quest. The people in Traffic negotiate their way through the horrific landscape of the sex trade ‘tunnels’ between Mexico and the United States with daring and tested faith.

From the slums of Mexico City to the perilous Rio Grande border, to a secret Internet sex slave auction and the final climactic confrontation at a stash house in suburban New Jersey, Ray and Jorge form an unbreakable bond as they pursue Adriana’s kidnappers before she is sold and disappears forever into this brutal global underworld.

On September 28, 2007, the film had a limited release in the United States and Canada, grossing an estimated $114,000 in 90 cinemas, with an average of $1,266 per theatre.
