A page in a script usually corresponds to one minute of screen time. As a rule of thumb, screenplays should be between 90 and 120 pages long. Screenplays are made up of multiple scenes, each of which can range in length from half a page to 10 pages. Most scenes, though, are three pages or less.
Screenplays have certain formatting standards for simple readability and to ensure that the ‘one page per minute of screen time rule’ is always followed. The font is an important part of script formatting. The spacing of the font used to create a screenplay must be constant. As a result, most screenplays are written in 12-point Courier font, single-spaced. Courier is a monospaced or ‘fixed-pitch’ font, meaning that each character and space is the same width.
Scene headings should always be capitalized (and maybe bolded) and kept to a minimum. A two-part scene heading is used by some writers. ‘International Police Station – Bathroom – Night,’ for example. This type of slugline is frequently used in films with a lot of scenes in the same setting, such as a house, to distinguish between the rooms.
A character’s lines must appear as dialogue whenever they speak, whether out loud or via voiceover. The dialogue is one inch from the left edge, centered on the page. Above the line of conversation, the name of the character who is speaking should always be in all caps.
