The live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid has a release date, and we’re less than two years away from viewing it. The fresh take on the animated classic will hit theatres on May 26, 2023, according to Disney. It’s unknown whether it’ll be released concurrently on Disney+, but for the time being, all new Disney films are enjoying an exclusive theatre run.
To commemorate the completion of production on Disney’s latest reinvention, lead actress Halle Bailey shared a first look at her as Ariel in The Little Mermaid in early July 2021. It’s scheduled for a cinema release, but as we’ve learned over the last year, anything can happen.
After a few setbacks, filming on the new film is already complete, with a shoot scheduled for January to July 2021. Jodi Benson, who played Ariel in the original, endorsed Bailey’s casting.
Awkwafina, who starred in Crazy Rich Asians and The Farewell, will play a gender-swapped Scuttle, Ariel’s seagull buddy who helps her navigate her new, voiceless world, while Room star Jacob Tremblay will play Flounder, Ariel’s confidant. Many people were hoping for a drag queen to play the undersea villain Ursula, thus Melissa McCarthy, an Oscar candidate, was hired in the role.
