What are Tyler Perry’s best movies?

Tyler Perry has made some terrific movies, which may sound like an oxymoron. Not great films, mind you, but perfectly acceptable examples of near-mainstream entertainment with the added bonus of reuniting alienated and forgotten audiences of color in the cinema to celebrate their own. He’s achieved significant commercial status while still growing. Here is the list.

1. Madea’s Big Happy Family:

Madea’s Big Happy Family

It seems unfair to rank this as Perry’s greatest, if only because it reflects his most recent artistic achievements, and one expects that all creative types progress with age.

2. For Coloured Girls:

When it comes to musicals, Perry makes his most daring statement as a director here and only a few people were paying attention. There was always going to be some opposition to this artist taking on one of African American culture’s most hallowed books, but there’s nothing wrong with this adaptation.

3. I Can Do Bad All By Myself:

I Can Do Bad All By Myself

It was just a matter of time before Perry let the music speak for itself instead of Madea, and this is one of his best comedic dramas. The plot is basic – three orphans seeking a home with their inebriated diva aunt — and the payoff is filled with incredible music from Gladys Knight, Mary J. Blige, and, perhaps most notably, Marvin Winans.

4. Madea Goes to Jail:

Despite the fact that the two plots never fully come together, this is one of Perry’s funniest flicks. He merely places Madea in various circumstances and allows her aggressive, violent nature to pervade everything, as he frequently does in his stage pieces.

5. Why Did I Get Married? :

There’s another ‘all-star’ ensemble here, with superstar singer Janet Jackson being the most recognizable face, and the story revolves on one of Perry’s pet peeves, resulting in one of the most constant efforts.
