Ronald Wilson Reagan was an American politician who served as the 40th President of the United States from 1981 to 1989. He was born on February 6, 1911. He was the Republican Party’s 33rd governor of California from 1967 to 1975, following a career as a Hollywood actor and labor organizer.

Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois, to a low-income family. In 1932, he graduated from Eureka College and went to work in Iowa as a radio sports commentator. Reagan moved to California in 1937 to pursue a career as an actor. He appeared in a number of notable productions.
Reagan served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1947 to 1952, during which time he tried to drive out purported communist influence within the organization. He switched to television in the 1950s and became a spokesman for General Electric. He was president of the Screen Actors Guild again from 1959 to 1960.

Reagan launched his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in 1980 in November 1979. He defeated incumbent Democratic president Jimmy Carter in both the nomination and the election. Reagan was the oldest individual to be elected president of the United States at the time of his first inauguration, at the age of 69 years and 349 days.
His presidency marked a shift in American policy toward conservatism, and he is often regarded as a conservative icon. His presidency is regarded as one of the best among American presidents by historians and the general public.
