In 1973, while riding his motorbike, James Stacy was hit by a drunk driver, resulting in the amputation of his left leg and arm, as well as the death of his fiancée. In 1975, he returned to acting before retiring in 1992.
Maurice William Elias, better known by his stage name James Stacy, was an American film and television actor who was born on December 23, 1936. He is well remembered for his role in the late 1960s television western Lancer.

In 1957, Stacy’s screen debut in Sayonara, and in Highway Patrol, he made his television debut. From 1958 until 1963, he played ‘Fred’ in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet regularly. Several episodes of Gunsmoke, Hazel, The Donna Reed Show, Have Gun – Will Travel, Combat!, and Perry Mason in the 1964 episode ‘The Case of the Simple Simon’ and the series finale ‘The Case of the Final Fade-out’ in 1966 were among his guest appearances on television during the 1960s.

Following his rehabilitation, Stacy featured in parts that were specifically designed to accommodate his impairment. In the 1975 Kirk Douglas Western Posse, he played newspaper publisher Harold Hellman, a role Douglas had developed specifically for him. In 1977, he played a double-amputee Vietnam veteran in the TV movie Just a Little Inconvenience. He was nominated for his first Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama or Comedy Special for the performance.
