Drew Barrymore born on February 22, 1975, is an American actress, producer, and director who rose from child star to leading woman. She is best recognized for her work in romantic comedies.
Wes Craven directed and Kevin Williamson wrote Scream, a 1996 American slasher film. David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich, and Drew Barrymore star in the picture. It tells the story of Sidney Prescott, a high school student in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, who becomes the target of a mysterious killer dressed up as Ghostface for Halloween.
The film satirizes the clichés of the slasher genre popularized in films such as Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th (1980), and Craven’s own A Nightmare on Elm Street by combining black humor and a “whodunit” mystery with the brutality of the slasher genre (1984). At the time of its premiere, Scream has seen as unique in that it included characters that were aware of real-life horror films and freely addressed the clichés that the film tried to spoof.
After an explosion of direct-to-video releases and countless sequels to existing horror properties from the 1970s and 1980s, Scream was credited with reviving the slasher genre in the 1990s, which was thought to be nearly dead.
As they exploited clichés on which films in the genre had become reliant, their sequels received declining financial and critical success. Scream produced a succession of sequels, however only Scream 2, released the following year, was as commercially and critically successful as the first. They were accused of motivating and even instigating violent crimes and murders in the years after the publication of Scream and its sequels.
