Shrek Forever After, also known as Shrek: The Final Chapter and Shrek Goes Fourth, is a 2010 American computer-animated comedy movie largely based on William Steig’s 1990 picture book Shrek! It is the fourth and final episode in the Shrek movie series, and the sequel to Shrek the Third (2007). It is produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures.
Mike Mitchell directed the movie, which was written by Josh Klausner and Darren Lemke. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Antonio Banderas reprise their prior roles, with Walt Dohrn in the part of Rumpelstiltskin being introduced.
Shrek struggles with the responsibility and burden of being a domesticated family man, wishing for the days when he was a solitary and feared character. Rumpelstiltskin dupes him into signing a contract that has disastrous implications.
On April 21, 2010, the movie opened at the Tribeca Film Festival, and on May 21, 2010, it was distributed in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theatres across the United States. The movie premiered as the highest-grossing film in the United States and Canada, a position it held for three weeks in a row.
Critics gave it mixed reviews, although it went on to gross $752 million worldwide, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2010. Shrek Forever After also became DreamWorks Animation’s second-highest-grossing film outside of the United States. Despite being advertised as the franchise’s final entry, a fifth Shrek feature has been reported to be in the works in the years following Forever After was released.
