Alicia Silverstone is an American actress who was born on October 4, 1976. She made her film debut in the sensual thriller The Crush (1993), for which she won the 1994 MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, and rose to fame as a teen idol when she starred in the music video for Aerosmith’s ‘Cryin’ at the age of 16.
After starring as Cher Horowitz in the teen comedy picture Clueless (1995), Silverstone signed a multi-million dollar agreement with Columbia Pictures. She played Batgirl in the big-budget superhero picture, Batman & Robin, in 1997.
For her work in the short-lived NBC sitcom Miss Match, Silverstone received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy (2003). She has continued to work as an actress in films, television shows, and on stage. Silverstone is a vegan who supports PETA’s work and has written two cookbooks: The Kind Diet (2009) and The Kind Mama (2014).
Deirdre ‘Didi’ Silverstone (née Radford), a Scottish former Pan Am flight attendant, and Monty Silverstone, an English real estate agent, gave birth to Silverstone in San Francisco, California. She was born and raised in Hillsborough, California. Her father was born into a Jewish household, and before marrying, her mother converted to Conservative Judaism.
Her first credited acting appearance was as Kevin’s high school ‘dream girl’ in the episode ‘Road Test’ on The Wonder Years in 1992. Silverstone made her film debut in the sexual thriller The Crush, in which she played a teenage girl who plots to ruin an older man after he rejects her affections; she was legally emancipated at the age of 15 in order to work the hours required for the film’s filming schedule.
Silverstone starred in the comedies Bad Therapy, Sister of the Groom, and Valley Girl in 2020, as well as narrated CHENDELL: A Natural Warrior and the Audible podcast Eat S-t Kenny Daniels. She made her acting debut in Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club.
Silverstone is well-known for his activism on behalf of animal rights and the environment. After attending an animal rights gathering in 1998, she became a vegan, claiming, ‘I recognized that I was the problem.’ I used to be an animal lover who ate animals.’
