Who is Peter Lawford?

Peter Sydney Ernest Lawford, better known as Peter Lawford, was an English-born American actor, producer, and socialite who spent his whole life in the United States. He was born on September 7, 1923.

He was a member of the ‘Rat Pack’ and the brother-in-law of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Representative Edward F. Kennedy. He was a well-known figure from the 1940s to the 1960s, appearing in a number of critically praised films. Later in life, he was known more for his off-screen celebrity antics than for his acting; he was dubbed ‘famous for being famous.’

Lieutenant-General Sir Sydney Turing Barlow Lawford, KBE (1865–1953), and May Sommerville Bunny (1883–1972) raised him in London. His mother was married to Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Ernest Vaughn Aylen D.S.O, one of Sir Sydney’s officers, at the time of Peter’s birth, while his father was married to Muriel Williams.

He spent his early youth in France and was never formally educated as a result of his family’s travels. Instead, he was educated by governesses and tutors, who included tennis and ballet lessons in his curriculum.

Lawford’s right arm was seriously wounded in an accident when it crashed through a glass door when he was 14 years old. Irreversible nerve injury severely limited his forearm and hand function, which he eventually learned to hide.

When Lawford secured a long-term contract with MGM in June 1943, his career took off. He was signed by the studio for a specific role in The White Cliffs of Dover (1944), in which he played a young soldier during WWII.

Chrislaw Productions, named after Peter’s son Christopher, was founded by Lawford and his manager Milt Ebbins in 1961. For $10 million, it secured a three-year deal with United Artists to produce three films and two television programs. The executive producer was to be William Asher.

Lawford died of heart arrest on Christmas Eve 1984 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, at the age of 61. After years of substance misuse, he developed renal and liver failure. His ashes were placed at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery after he was cremated.
