Hyderabad police have intensified their crackdown on the promotion of illegal betting apps, now targeting Tollywood celebrities. The Miyapur police have registered an FIR against 25 individuals, including actors Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Manchu Lakshmi, and Vijay Deverakonda, under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Telangana Gaming Act, and the IT Act.
The case originated from a complaint by Miyapur resident Phanidra Sharma, who alleged that celebrities and influencers endorsing betting platforms contribute to financial distress and social harm. This marks the first instance of actors being formally booked for such promotions.
In addition to the named stars, several influencers and public figures, including Siri Hanumanthu, Sreemukhi, and Vasantha Krishna, are also under investigation. Notices have been issued to the accused, with some already appearing before authorities.
The crackdown follows similar cases against YouTubers like Harsha Sai and ‘Local Boy Nani,’ linked to significant financial losses among users. Hyderabad’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) SM Vijay Kumar acknowledged the growing crisis, citing cases of heavy financial losses and suicides linked to online betting. Investigations are ongoing, and more developments are expected.
