Is Umrao Jaan a real story?

Umrao Jaan is a 2006 Hindi-language musical romantic drama film produced and directed by J. P. Dutta. It is based on the Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada and tells the story of the titular famous courtesan.
Abhishek Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Sunil Shetty, Divya Dutta, Himani Shivpuri, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda star in the lead role, with Abhishek Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Sunil Shetty, Divya Dutta, Himani Shivpuri, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in supporting parts.

Umrao Jaan was released on 3 November 2006 on 600–700 cinemas globally and grossed Rupees 195 million on a budget of Rupees 150 million. Anu Malik composed the music, and Javed Akhtar wrote the lyrics. Alka Yagnik, Anmol Malik, Richa Sharma, and Sonu Nigam recorded the entire album, which was released on the T-Series label. Anmol Malik, Malik’s daughter, made her singing debut on this album, singing ‘Agle Janam Mohe Bitya (Reprise)’.

The film, according to Dutta, is based on a script written by his father, O. P. Dutta, which was adapted from Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s classic Urdu novel Umrao Jan Ada. The film was shot on location in Jaipur, including some palaces. The dances were to be choreographed by Saroj Khan, but he backed out due to differences with director J. P. Dutta. Vaibhavi Merchant took her place.
