Was Border a superhit movie?

J. P. Dutta directed, produced, and wrote the 1997 Indian Hindi-language epic war film Border. It is an adaptation of true events that occurred at the Battle of Longewala in 1971 during the Indo-Pakistani War. Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Jackie Shroff, Sudesh Berry, Puneet Issar, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda feature in the film. In supporting roles, Tabu, Raakhee, Pooja Bhatt, and Sharbani Mukherjee appear.

The film received positive critical acclaim for its story, execution, scope, showing off the combat, director, screenplay, performances, and soundtrack when it was released worldwide on June 13, 1997. It had a fantastic opening weekend box office and was dubbed an all-time blockbuster by Box Office India with a domestic net total of Rupees 394 million (US$5.2 million).

It was also the highest-grossing Hindi film of 1997 in India, but it was the second-highest-grossing film of the year internationally, trailing only Dil To Pagal Hai. Border made a total of Rupees 655.7 million (US$8.7 million) worldwide.

Several accolades were given to the film at various award events. At the 43rd Filmfare Awards, it earned 11 nominations, including Best Film, Best Actor for Sunny Deol, Best Supporting Actor for Suniel Shetty and Akshaye Khanna, and Best Supporting Actress for Raakhee, and won four of them, including Best Male Debut for Akshaye Khanna. It also received three National Film Awards, including Best Film on National Integration, Best Lyricist for Javed Akhtar, and Best Male Playback Singer.
