What is ITV?

ITV, also known as Channel 3, is a free-to-air television network in the United Kingdom. Independent Television was created in 1955 to compete with BBC Television (established in 1932). It is the UK’s oldest commercial television network. Channel 3 has been its legal name since the Broadcasting Act of 1990, to separate it from the other analog channels at the time, BBC1, BBC2, and Channel 4.

For four decades, ITV was a network of independent enterprises that supplied regional television services as well as common programming to be broadcast across the entire network. Originally, each franchise was owned by a different firm. The fifteen regional franchises are now held by two companies: ITV plc, which runs the channel, and STV Group, which runs the STV channel, following various mergers.

The network is distinct from ITV plc, which was formed in 2004 by the merging of Granada plc and Carlton Communications. Except for central and northern Scotland, where STV Group controls the Channel 3 broadcasting licenses, ITV plc holds the Channel 3 broadcasting licenses for every region.

It now just commissions the network schedule from a central location; programs are produced by ITV Studios and independent production businesses. Regional programming can still be found in news and current affairs shows.

ITV plc used the brand name UTV as the name of the channel in Northern Ireland until April 2020. Former owner UTV Media used this moniker (now known as Wireless Group). UTV was purchased by ITV plc in 2016.

Although the network has been around since 1955, numerous regional franchisees have changed over the years. Some of the network’s most notable names in the past, such as Thames, ABC, and ATV, have no connection to the current network.
