Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is a 2011 American fantasy adventure movie, the fourth part in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie sequence and an impartial sequel to At World’s End (2007).

On May 20, 2011, On Stranger Tides was released in the United States. The film shattered numerous box office records and finished 2011 as the third highest-grossing film of all time. Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth feature, was released in May 2017, and a sixth film is in the works. In June 2009, Bruckheimer stated that Disney preferred the fourth Pirates film to be released before The Lone Ranger, which he, Johnny Depp, Ted Elliott, and Terry Rossio had been working on since May 20, 2011. During the filming of Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio came across Tim Powers’ 1987 novel On Stranger Tides, which they thought would provide a strong foundation for “a new chapter” in the Pirates franchise.

In September 2008, Depp agreed to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, stating that he would return provided the script was excellent. Disney announced Depp will be paid $55.5 million for his involvement almost a year later, recognizing that the franchise would be ‘dead and buried’ without him.
