Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, Anton Yelchin, Jeffrey Wright, Slimane Dazi, and John Hurt star in Jim Jarmusch’s comedy-drama Only Lovers Left Alive, which was released in 2013. The movie is an international co-production between the United Kingdom and Germany that centers on a vampire romance and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
In an international critics survey conducted in 2016, the film was voted among the top 100 films released since 2000 by 177 critics from around the world. Todd McCarthy, the chief film critic for The Hollywood Reporter, ranked it the fourth-best picture of the decade in late 2019.
Jarmusch’s band SQÜRL, who are principally responsible for the film’s score, opens with a cover of Wanda Jackson’s 1961 hit ‘Funnel of Love.’ Zola Jesus and Lebanese vocalist Yasmine Hamdan also contributed to the soundtrack, while Dutch lute musician Jozef van Wissem’s compositions were at the heart of the film’s sonic aesthetic.
Although the narratives are unrelated, the title is a nod to the 1964 Dave Wallis science fiction novel of the same name. A film adaption starring The Rolling Stones was planned in the mid-1960s for director Nicholas Ray.
The movie was added to the competition section of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival in April 2013. It was screened at various film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2013, four showing at the Reykjavik International Film Festival in September/October 2013, and as the opening film for the 4th American Film Festival in Wroclaw, Poland.
