What is The Pacific?

The Pacific is a 2010 American war drama miniseries produced by HBO, Playtone, and DreamWorks, which debuted on March 14, 2010, in the United States.

The series is a follow-up to the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers, and it focuses on the actions of the US Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater of Operations during the Pacific War.

Unlike Band of Brothers, which followed the men of Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment through the European Theater, The Pacific follows three Marines (Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge, and John Basilone) who served in different regiments of the 1st Marine Division (1st, 5th, and 7th, respectively).

One of the key writers on Band of Brothers, Bruce C. McKenna (co-executive producer), was the driving force for The Pacific. Hugh Ambrose, the son of Stephen Ambrose, author of Band of Brothers, was a project consultant.

The Pacific

The series of miniseries depicts conflicts in the Pacific fought by the 1st Marine Division, including Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa, as well as Basilone’s participation in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

It is primarily based on the memoirs of two US Marines: Eugene Sledge’s With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa and Robert Leckie’s Helmet for My Pillow. It also references Sledge’s memoir China Marine and Chuck Tatum’s memoir Red Blood, Black Sand, a Marine who fought beside Basilone at Iwo Jima.
