BHOOL CHUK MAAF Movie Review: CAN’T ESCAPE THE NEVER-ENDING CYCLE OF MIDDLE-CLASS HOUSEHOLD CLICHES

Movie Review by Prashant Shukla

Plot:

Ranjan Tiwari lands a government job through ‘jugaad’, impressing his father-in-law and getting ready to marry the love of his life, Titli. But the day after his haldi ceremony, he realizes that May 29th is repeating over and over again. What kind of time loop is this-and how he escapes it-forms the basic premise of the film.

The Performances

The performances are just as predictable as the film. Not bad-that’s not the issue-but they feel stuck on repeat. Rajkummar Rao is doing the same thing he always does in these middle- class family dramas. That Stree-like, a bit over- the-top and dramatic style is still there. He’s good, but there’s nothing new. Wamiqa Gabbi brings a similar vibe-almost like a female version of Rao. Even the supporting cast feels familiar, like you’ve seen these same characters in a bunch of other movies.

The Comedy:

The jokes in Bhool Chuk Maaf are a mixed bag- they land once in a while, but most of the time, they just don’t hit. When they do work, it feels less like clever writing and more like a game of darts- keep throwing enough, and one will eventually stick. Pure fluke, really. The film leans heavily into a campy, loud, over-expressive style of comedy that quickly becomes too much to handle. It’s exhausting rather than entertaining

The Songs & BGM

Don’t you feel like you’re watching a bit of IPL in between the ads these days? That’s exactly how the songs in Bhool Chuk Maaf feel. At every minor turn in the plot, a song suddenly appears out of nowhere. They try to blend it into the story, but it just doesn’t work-it feels forced and clunky, breaking whatever little flow the narrative has. On top of that, the BGM is extremely annoying. Instead of adding energy or buoyancy to the scenes, it’s there to push the jokes as hard as possible, which actually ruins even the few moments that might have worked.

Formulaic

Let’s play for a while. A middle-class guy getting crap from his family, hanging out with two friends who hype him up, and a loud, sassy girlfriend who’s always cheerful. Then he lands in some big, weird trouble, learns a life lesson by the end, and there’s an item song somewhere in the middle. Now tell me, how many films have you seen with these same beats? That’s the issue with the film- it still could’ve worked if the comedy or the message had been strong enough, but it doesn’t at all and ends up disappointing you in every aspect.

Final Verdict:

Bhool Chuk Maaf feels stuck in a loop of worn- out cliches and predictable beats. Despite some moments that try to shine, the film never truly grabs you or offers anything fresh. In the end, it’s a forgettable watch that falls short on both comedy and heart.
