Edward Regan Murphy, an American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and singer, was born on April 3, 1961. From 1980 until 1984, he was a regular cast member of the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, where he rose to popularity. Eddie Murphy has also performed stand-up comedy and was voted No. 10 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-up Comedians of All Time.
Craig Brewer directs Dolemite Is My Name, a 2019 American biographical comedy film written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. Eddie Murphy plays director Rudy Ray Moore, who is best known for his portrayal of Dolemite in both his stand-up routine and a series of blaxploitation films that began with Dolemite in 1975.
On September 7, 2019, the film had its global premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was released in a limited run on October 4 and became available for streaming three weeks later on Netflix.
Dolemite Is My Name was well received by both audiences and critics, with acclaim for Murphy’s performance as well as the humor. It was named one of the ten finest films of the year by both the National Board of Review and Time magazine. The film was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor for Murphy at the 77th Golden Globe Awards.
