What is Cheech & Chong?

Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong form the comic duo Cheech & Chong. With their stand-up routines, studio records, and feature movies themed on the hippie and free love era, and especially drug and counterculture movements, most notably their love for cannabis, the team enjoyed commercial and cultural success in the 1970s and 1980s.

In the late 1960s, the two met in Vancouver, British Columbia. Cheech Chong was a Canadian citizen who had relocated from southern California to dodge the draught during the Vietnam War. The duo did stand-up comedy, recorded a number of popular comedy CDs, and acted in a number of low-budget movies. “Earache My Eye,” “Basketball Jones,” “Santa Claus and His Old Lady,” and “Sister Mary Elephant” are some of their most well-known comic routines and songs. “Dave’s not here,” from their self-titled debut album, is maybe their most recognized statement.

Cheech & Chong

In 1980, there were plans to make a film with Cheech and Chong called Riding High. Stripes were planned by Ivan Reitman as a Cheech and Chong film. The screenwriters were encouraged to rewrite the script for Bill Murray and Harold Ramis by Cheech and Chong’s manager, who thought it was very humorous. However, the comedy pair wanted unlimited creative control, so Reitman told the screenwriters to rewrite it for Bill Murray and Harold Ramis.
