When was the Solar Entertainment Corporation established?

Wilson, William, and Willy Tieng formed and own Solar Entertainment Corporation, a Philippine media firm. Solar Entertainment is the owner and operator of two digital free-to-air channels as well as two cable channels. Solar also owns Solar Pictures, a film distribution company, and a now-defunct freemium digital television service (Easy TV Home).

In 1976, the brothers William Tieng, Wilson Tieng, and Willy Tieng formed and established Solar Entertainment. In 1988, Solar Films was founded to bring international films to the Philippines. Solar has been working with independent film director Brillante Mendoza on a multi-picture deal since 2012.

Solar launched the Sinag Maynila film festival on March 18, 2015, which featured five films from a diverse collection of directors, each with their own unique vision and approach. From March 18 to 24, 2015, the films were exhibited in select SM Cinemas. On March 22, the winners were declared at the ‘Gabi ng Parangal.’


Solar announced on April 2, 2004, that they will distribute United International Pictures films in the Philippines, beginning with DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 2 on May 21, 2004, and continuing until a temporary restraining order halted UIP’s operations in the country in March 2014.
