One day, he reads a news report about the arrest of Aaron Stampler, a 19-year-old Kentucky altar boy with a severe stutter, for the savage murder of Archbishop Rushman.

Vail is ecstatic at the prospect of representing the young man pro gratis. Vail grows to believe that Stampler is innocent during his encounters with him at the County jail, much to the dismay of Vail’s old lover, prosecutor Janet Venable.
