Christian Charles Philip Bale is an English actor who was born on January 30, 1974. He has been a leading guy in films of various genres and is known for his versatility and repeated physical modifications to perform his characters. Bale has received numerous awards, including an Academy Award and two Golden Globe nominations.
In 2011, he was named to Time magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people. Empire of the Sun is a 1987 US dramatic coming-of-age war film based on the semi-autobiographical 1984 novel of the same name by J. G. Ballard. Christian Bale, John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson, and Nigel Havers star in Steven Spielberg’s film. The film follows Jamie “Jim” Graham, a young boy who grows up in an affluent British family in Shanghai before becoming a POW in a Japanese detention camp during World War II.
Before Spielberg came on board as a producer for Lean, Harold Becker and David Lean were set to direct. Because of a personal connection to Lean’s films and World War II themes, Spielberg was drawn to directing the film.
It is his most deep work on ‘the loss of innocence,’ according to him. The picture garnered favorable reviews but was not a box office success at first, grossing only $22,238,696 in the United States, but it later more than recouped its budget through sales in other territories.
