Star Trek 4 is the working title for a Paramount Pictures science fiction movie in development, based on Gene Roddenberry’s television series Star Trek. It is set to be the 14th installment in the Star Trek film franchise. Since 2015, there have been various distinct versions of the movie in development.
J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay are developing a sequel to Star Trek Beyond (2016), which was announced before the film’s release. Quentin Tarantino offered his own Star Trek feature proposal to producer J. J. Abrams in December 2017, and production began separately from the Beyond sequel. In April 2018, S. J. Clarkson was chosen to direct the latter, but negotiations with stars Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth broke down in August, and the actors dropped out of the film.
In November 2019, Noah Hawley was hired to write and direct a new installment of the franchise. In January 2020, Tarantino announced that he will not be directing his Star Trek picture. In August of that year, Hawley’s version was put on hold to allow Paramount to decide on the best course for the property.
In March 2021, Kalinda Vazquez was planning to write the script for a new film based on her own original idea, while Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet were working on a separate story. In July, Matt Shakman was hired to helm the latter picture, and Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires rewrote the script in November. On December 22, 2023, the film is scheduled to release.
