Bates’ performance earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress at the 63rd Academy Awards, making Misery the only movie based on a Stephen King novel to win an Oscar. Misery is one of King’s top ten favorite movie versions, according to him.

On a plane, producer Andrew Scheinman read Stephen King’s novel Misery and later recommended it to Rob Reiner, his director partner at Castle Rock Entertainment. Reiner eventually asked screenwriter William Goldman to create the screenplay for the picture.

Marc Shaiman composed the movie’s soundtrack. Three Liberace records, as well as ‘Shotgun’ by Junior Walker and the All-Stars, which plays just before Paul’s vehicle crash, are featured in the movie. Misery earned $10,076,834 in its first weekend. It ended up grossing $61 million in the United States.
