Who is James Whitmore?

James Allen Whitmore Jr., also known as James Whitmore, was an American actor who was born on October 1, 1921. He garnered multiple awards and nominations, including a Tony Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and two Grammy Awards, as well as two Academy Award nominations.

Whitmore was born in White Plains, New York, to Florence Belle (née Crane) and James Allen Whitmore Sr., a park commission administrator. He attended Amherst Central High School in Snyder, New York, for three years before receiving a football scholarship to the Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut. He moved on to Yale University to study, but after seriously damaging his knees, he had to stop playing football.

Whitmore studied acting in New York after WWII at the American Theatre Wing and the Actors Studio. Whitmore met his first wife, Nancy Mygatt, during this period. They were married in 1947 and had three kids before divorcing in 1971.

Whitmore made his Broadway debut after WWII in the part of the sergeant in Command Decision. Whitmore was signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, but his character in the film adaption was played by Van Johnson. The battleground was his first major film for MGM, in which he played a character that was turned down by Spencer Tracy, with whom Whitmore shared a physical similarity.

At 6611 Hollywood Boulevard, Whitmore holds a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. On February 8, 1960, the ceremony took place. In November 2008, Whitmore was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died of cancer on February 6, 2009, at the age of 87, in his Malibu, California home.
