How is the film Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood?

Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood is a 2017 American documentary film about Scotty Bowers, who worked in Hollywood as an unpaid pimp from the 1940s through the 1980s. Matt Tyrnauer, a Special Correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine, produced and directed the film, which was based on Bowers’ book Full Service. The film had its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and was released on July 27, 2018, in theatres.

In July 2020, Searchlight Pictures announced that it had purchased the documentary’s rights and was creating a feature film based on Bowers’ life. The script was written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and directed by Luca Guadagnino.

The film has an acceptance rating of 86 percent based on 72 reviews on the review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 6.91/10. “Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood give enough of prurient delights for film aficionados, but behind the gossip lies a poignantly revealing look at decades of sexual mores,” according to the website’s critical consensus.

The film received a normalized score of 67 out of 100 from Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, based on 24 critics, indicating “generally good reviews.”

“What could have been a merely sensationalistic exposé of the private lives of then-closed screen luminaries instead emerges, in the hands of documentarian Matt Tyrnauer as a nicely filled-out look at different eras, one secrecy-ridden and dedicated to the preservation of illusion, the other wide open and blasé about personal predilections,” Todd McCarthy wrote in his review for The Hollywood Reporter.
