Rebel is an American legal comedy-drama television series developed by Krista Vernoff and based on the life of Erin Brockovich. It premiered on ABC on April 8, 2021, and ended on June 10, 2021. After one season, the show was terminated in May 2021.
ABC gave Rebel a put pilot commitment on October 31, 2019. It was issued a pilot order on January 23, 2020. The production was given a series order by ABC on September 16, 2020. Krista Vernoff wrote the pilot, and Tara Nicole Weyr directed it.
Vernoff devised the show, and Erin Brockovich, John Davis, John Fox, Andrew Stearn, and Alexandre Schmitt were scheduled to executive produce alongside him. Davis Entertainment, ABC Signature, and Sony Pictures Television were expected to be involved in the series production. Marc Webb and Adam Arkin were hired as executive producers on January 25, 2021. ABC canceled the show after one season on May 14, 2021.
On December 2, 2020, the series began production in Los Angeles, California. The series premiered on ABC on April 8, 2021. Rebel is shown on CTV in Canada and ABC in the United States. On May 28, 2021, the series aired as an original series on Disney+, under the exclusive streaming hub Star. The sitcom will premiere as a Star+ original in Latin America.
Katey Sagal was cast as the lead after the pilot order was announced. John Corbett, James Lesure, Tamala Jones, and Ariela Barer joined the main cast in February 2020. Andy Garcia and Lex Scott Davis were cast as leading roles in March 2020. Kevin Zegers and Sam Palladio joined the cast as Segal’s lead opposites on September 20, 2020.
Dan Bucatinsky was cast in recurring roles on January 25, 2021. Mary McDonnell, Adam Arkin, Matthew Glave, and Jalen Thomas Brooks joined the cast as recurring characters on February 9, 2021. Abigail Spencer joined the roster as a recurring character on February 25, 2021.
