Is Friday a crime movie?

Friday is a 1995 American buddy stoner comedy film written by Ice Cube and directed by F. Gary Gray. Ice Cube, Chris Tucker, Nia Long, Bernie Mac, Tiny ‘Zeus’ Lister Jr., and John Witherspoon star in the first edition of the Friday franchise. Craig Jones and Smokey, two unemployed buddies, are in jeopardy after becoming indebted to a local drug dealer on Friday.

Ice Cube and DJ Pooh voiced dissatisfaction with the representation of the hood in a movie, which they grew to consider as aggressive and threatening while working on the film. As a result, they wanted to offset this by creating characters and plot points based on real experiences.

The film’s production began after Ice Cube and DJ Pooh were able to acquire funding from New Line Cinema, who agreed to fund the project in exchange for a seasoned comic in one of the lead parts; during casting, Ice Cube and DJ Pooh promptly decided on Tucker. Gray, who had previously worked as a music video director, made his directorial debut with this picture.

Friday was released in theatres on April 26, 1995, in the United States. Critics complimented the comedy scenes, script, and acting performances, and it earned excellent reviews. The picture was a financial success as well, grossing $27 million worldwide.
