Movie Review:

When it comes to filmmaking, inspirational stories about underdogs don’t really have an expiration date. Sports movies and the unusual occurrences that lead one or more people to greatness is a concept that always succeeds to capture attention and, more often than not, success.

But it also comes with the responsibility to make your tale stand out, given how well-developed the concept is and how many movies have previously been released. Jungle Cry, directed by Sagar Ballary (Bheja Fry) and starring Abhay Deol, has all the components to be an outstanding picture.

Jungle Cry stands out almost immediately because it deals with a sport that was and still is unfamiliar to the general public: rugby. The fierce and very popular sport remains uncharted ground in India, making Jungle Cry’s narrative of a group of tribal 14-year-olds not just participating but also winning the junior world championship all the more fresh and delectable.

The treatment of the people and the surroundings is another area where Jungle Cry excels. We meet a group of kids who are just as befuddled by the sport and the world as the rest of us. He doesn’t cross any lines when it comes to portraying them as indestructible while playing against seasoned teams, and he doesn’t even go into cliches about poor families. That is a remarkable feat, and it is this that distinguishes the children and their performances.

One of Jungle Cry’s most significant flaws is unavoidable and not due to the game’s creators’ fault. The movie’s production value is clearly lesser than that of a typical big-budget sports drama. I have to admire the creators for making the most of what they had, but the production design’s significant magnitude is sadly a characteristic that becomes common.
