David Yates directed Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a 2016 science fiction movie. It is a spin-off and prequel to the Harry Potter film series, produced jointly by the United Kingdom and the United States. J. K. Rowling produced and wrote it as her screenplay debut, based on her 2001 ‘guide book’ of the same name.
Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, Ron Perlman, and Colin Farrell are among the cast members. It’s the first film in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, and the ninth overall in the Wizarding World franchise, which began with the Harry Potter movies.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them premiered in New York City on November 10, 2016, and was released in 3D, IMAX 3D 4K Laser, 4DX, and other large-format theatres worldwide on November 18, 2016. It got mostly positive critical reviews and was an economic success, collecting $814 million worldwide, making it the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2016.
The film received five BAFTA nominations, including Best British Film, and took home the award for Best Production Design. It received two Academy Award nominations and won Best Costume Design, making it the first Wizarding World film to win an Academy Award. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the first sequel, was released on November 16, 2018, and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is set to be released in April 2022.
