What is Hollywood Library all about?

The Multnomah County Library (MCL) in Portland, Oregon, operates the Hollywood Library. It’s in the heart of the Hollywood district. The library, which is on NE 41st Avenue and Tillamook Street, was erected in 2002 and has three levels of residential space above it.

The previous structure, which stood at NE 39th Avenue and Hancock Street from 1959 to 2003, was set to be sold to a private event for $675,000. At the branch, the MCL catalog of two million books, periodicals, and other objects is available.

The branch, which was known as Rose City Park Library until 1959, was founded in 1917 at 1236 Sandy Road and was known as Rose City Park Library until 1959. The library, which was heavily used, quickly reached capacity, causing local citizens to seek funds for a more substantial edifice.

In 1926, a new structure was built, designed by architect Jamieson Parker (who really designed the Belmont Library). In August of that year, it debuted at 1170 NE Hancock Street. As part of a long-range library plan, Multnomah County hired the Stewart and Richardson architecture firm to build a new 6,000 to 7,500 square foot (560 to 700 m2) facility for Rose City Park Library in the 1950s. The building, which is located at 3960 NE Hancock Street, was completed and opened in April 1959.

Two months later, the library board renamed the branch from Rose City Park Library to Hollywood Library to better reflect the community it served. By 1996, the circulation of this library had more than doubled, with an average of 47,000 items each month. In that year, voters approved a bond bill to modernize libraries, including the Hollywood branch and three others.

The library hired architect Thomas Hacker and Associates as well as development firm Sockeye Hollywood to build a mixed-use structure at NE 41st Avenue and Tillamook Street. A building with 47 mixed-income flats, completed in 2002, is located directly above the library.
