What is Squall Leonhart?

Squall Leonhart is a fictional character and the protagonist of Final Fantasy VIII, a Square Enix role-playing video game (now Square Enix). Squall is an 18-year-old student at Balamb Garden, a prominent military institution for top mercenaries in Final Fantasy VIII (known as ‘SeeDs’). He stands at a height of 177 cm (5 ft 10 in).

Squall befriends Quistis Trepe, Zell Dincht, Selphie Tilmitt, and Irvine Kinneas as the story progresses, and falls in love with Rinoa Heartilly. These relationships, together with the plot of the game, eventually transform him from a recluse to an open, loving individual. In addition to Chocobo Racing, Itadaki Street Special, and the Kingdom Hearts series as Leon, Squall has appeared in several other games.

Tetsuya Nomura created Squall with the help of game director Yoshinori Kitase. He was inspired by actor River Phoenix. The gun blade, Squall’s weapon, was designed to be tough to learn. Kazushige Nojima made Squall’s thoughts visible to the players for them to grasp his silent demeanor.

Squall’s initial vocal appearance is in the original Kingdom Hearts game, in which he is portrayed by Hideo Ishikawa in Japanese and David Boreanaz in English; further English-speaking appearances have been handled by Doug Erholtz.

Critics were split on Squall, with some dismissing him in favor of previous Final Fantasy protagonists due to his coldness and angst, while others praising his character development. His connection with Rinoa has been acclaimed, and the character has been well-liked.
