Tigmanshu Dhulia directed Haasil, a 2003 Indian crime drama film. The lead characters are Jimmy Sheirgill, Hrishitaa Bhatt, Irrfan Khan, and Ashutosh Rana. For his depiction of Ranvijay Singh in the film, Irrfan Khan got the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role. The film is set in and around Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, and was shot there. In the years since the film has gained cult significance.
Israr Ansari, Kausar Pandey, Vindo Mahindra, Satyaprakash, and Devmani Pandey contributed lyrics to the music, which includes seven songs created by Jatin Lalit. The film’s background score was composed by Abhishek Ray.
Haasil tells the narrative of Anirudh and Niharika, two students at Allahabad University who fall in love. The story is set against the backdrop of Allahabad University student politics and has the feel of a small-town romance. They face challenges due to the combined demands of small-town life and opposition from their families. Anirudh has also gained the favor and affection of another student, Ranvijay Singh, a prominent political figure at the University who Anirudh once assisted in hiding from his opponents, an act that likely saved Ran Vijay’s life.
Niharika, on the other hand, is always apprehensive of Ranvijay. She disapproves of Anirudh’s friendship with him. Laxmi Shanker Pandey, the current President of the Student’s Union, is Ranvijay’s main opponent. The power battle between the two factions plays out in the backdrop of the movie, complete with violence and antagonism. Ranvijay succeeds in obliterating all opposition and establishing himself as the unquestioned student political leader.
Anirudh gains a guardian and a buddy in Ranvijay. Unbeknownst to Anirudh, Ran Vijay secretly covets Niharika and manages to get Anirudh out of Allahabad. However, Anirudh senses something is wrong and returns to Allahabad only to discover that a wedding has been planned between Niharika and Ranvijay, the person who had seemingly stood by him through thick and thin has turned out to be his greatest betrayer. Together, Niharika and Anirudh flee.
